I just read through a bunch of reviews of this and was honestly shocked it’s so divisive, with many Bujold fans rating it one or two stars. Just wanted to add my voice to the side of “Boy do I love this series.” It is definitely Romance with Fantasy Elements, vs. a fantasy book with a dash of romance. Maybe that’s what is off-putting so many people - incorrect expectations going in?
Anyway, I think it’s absolutely lovely, had insightful things to say about family, responsibilities, in- vs. out-groups, heritage, etc. And it’s one of the few series that I’ve re-read in its entirety multiple times, as I’m getting older and my to-read pile just keeps getting bigger, and time is running out in my quest to read All The Things.
