Old school - the lifts from Tolkien and D&D are only lightly concealed. But good! Just what I was looking for, in terms of good vs. evil, heroes overcoming overwhelming odds, and some introspection as to whether the ability to hit someone with a sword is really the determining factor of who a hero is. I’m frankly shocked I had never read this before. No idea how I missed it back in the day.
